Riding clothes guide

What children should wear to riding lessons

Safe, comfortable clothing helps a child focus on the horse. Families do not need a complete show wardrobe for a first lesson, but a few choices matter from the beginning.

Four minute read

Start with the essentials

Choose close fitting long pants that allow the child to move freely. Riding tights or breeches are ideal, while smooth athletic leggings can work for an introductory visit if the instructor approves them.

  • An approved equestrian helmet that fits correctly
  • A shoe or boot with a defined heel
  • Long fitted pants without loose fabric
  • A tucked or close fitting shirt suitable for the weather

Why footwear and helmets matter

A defined heel helps prevent the foot from sliding through the stirrup. Open shoes, sandals, and broad athletic shoes are not appropriate around horses or in the saddle.

The helmet must be designed and certified for equestrian use. Bicycle helmets are built for a different type of impact. A lesson helmet should sit level, feel snug, and remain secure when the rider moves.

Austin weather preparation

Lightweight breathable layers are useful during warm Austin months. In cooler weather, choose fitted layers that do not flap or restrict movement. Bring water and label personal equipment clearly.

The UDJC team will confirm any current equipment requirements before the trial, so families should follow that message over general online advice.
